Police Officer to Consultant: Hannibal Harris Helping Others
Thank you to Mr. Hannibal Harris for submitting this post:
Given the United States legal justice system. I think it’s safe to say, every citizen in some way has been affected. Many Moons ago, I had an uncle incarcerated and charged with sexual assault. He passionately plead his innocence while being held with no bail. Given my uncle’s history of past run-ins with law enforcement for minor petty offenses, his pleas of innocence ultimately fell on deaf ears. As time and public defenders passed my uncle begin to accept the reality of the possibility of spending the rest of his productive adult life in prison.
While visiting my grandmother on leave from the military, I had the opportunity to speak with my uncle via telephone. His voice was filled with excitement to hear his oldest nephew’s voice but also a hint of frustration and anger, as he felt he was being wrongly punished for a crime he did not commit. As he spoke my eyes glared at a large envelope sitting on the dining room table. Later, I would discover this envelope held the key to my uncle’s freedom.
I could see the disappointment mixed with happiness in my grandmothers face. Yet another issue the Matriarch of the family would have to process. As I said my goodbyes and headed towards the door, my grandmother handed me the large envelope. “Help that damn uncle of yours if you can” she stated. “You’re a smart boy and cheaper than a lawyer,” she said with laughter.
This large envelope contained document after document of what I could only describe back then as “legal stuff!” It might as well had been written in Mandarin Chinese. I begin to take it one page at a time with a dictionary by my side, “Google” hadn’t made its way into our lives quite yet. I slowly begin to piece together his case. Finding many inconsistencies and contradictions. I became an expert at sending Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) request.
I had to figure out what that exactly meant before I started using them. After roughly six months of work, it had become blatantly obvious that my uncle was innocent. My uncle was picked out of a photo line up based on a detective advising the victim my uncle had a violent past and lived nearby. Both lies! Charged were untimely dropped and my uncle released. As I tell this story, I often wonder the life-changing effects it had on me and my life choices? Hate to cut it short, but I have to get back to work. I have the most impatient clients at times. I guess this ex-police officer running a Consulting Firm isn’t doing half bad.
