Prison the Hidden Sentence™ and Friends and Family of Incarcerated Persons: Two Organizations With a Common Goal
Julia Lazareck, CEO and founder of Prison the Hidden Sentence™, and president of Friends and Family of Incarcerated Persons (FFIP) presented to the Toastmasters Burnt Toast II club on May 2, 2018. She spoke about the “hidden sentence”.
When people who have a loved one in the prison system and don’t talk about it, they are essentially serving the sentence with their loved ones. The only difference is that they’re serving it on the outside.

When Julia’s brother was incarcerated she didn’t have anyone to talk to and felt alone and shame. Then she found FFIP that had members who understood what she was going through and supported her. The group is in it’s 18th year and continues to facilitate support meetings. As president, she is working with the group to expand their support and offer workshops to help people lead balanced and productive lives while their loved ones are incarcerated. The group is also rolling out a program for children of incarcerated parent(s). It’s really important to provide the children with support and tools to deal with the emotional impact of having a family member in the prison system.
Prison the Hidden Sentence™ provides information and stories from and for people involved in the prison system. By sharing stories people can learn from others so they have the information they need and don’t feel alone when going through the trauma alone of having a loved one in the prison system. The stories provide the information and emotional support they need when dealing with a loved one in the prison system.
Prison the Hidden Sentence™ and Friends and Family of Incarcerated Persons (FFIP) have common goals:
- Raise awareness of the effects of incarceration to friends and family
- Close the empathy gap
Volunteers are needed to keep the momentum going to continue growing the communities and programs to support people going through the ordeal of having a loved one in the prison system.
